Ontario Arts Council Awards $10,000 Grant

The Ontario Arts Council (OAC) has awarded Sara E. Mayhew a $10,000 grant for her series, Legend of the Ztarr, through their Northern Arts program. The Northern Arts program provides funding to emerging, mid-career and established individual artists and arts organizations in the northern Ontario region. Sara received the Northern Arts grant in 2007 for work on her graphic novel, Secrets of Sorcerers.

Mayhew is a resident of Kirkland Lake, ON, where she works as a mangaka, writer and freelance illustrator. Her work focuses on promoting skepticism and science through arts and entertainment. A 2009 TED Fellowship member, Sara is featured in a Nokia campaign video about her work, spoke at TEDActive’10 in Palm Springs, CA, is a contributor to Skeptic North, and was a main program speaker at The Amaz!ng Meeting 9 (TAM9) in Las Vegas, this past July.

Meet Sara E. Mayhew at TAM 2011

Legend of the Ztarr creator, Sara E. Mayhew, will be a guest speaker at the Amaz!ng Meeting in Las Vegas, this week, July 14-17th. She’ll be presenting her talk, “Secular Storyteling”, on Sunday, July 17th, at 10:30am, which will touch on Legend of the Ztarr.

Interested TAM attendees can get their copy of Legend of the Ztarr right herethrough the website. Chapter 1 is available through iBooks, Amazon, Sony, Kobo, andNook. Chapter 2 is available through Amazon and both chapters can be purchased through Smashwords. You can also read both chapters for free right here on Legend of the Ztarr‘s official site! Just remember that donations are appreciated.

Special Legend of the Ztarr promotional postcards will be available at the event for signing!

The Amaz!ng Meeting (TAM) is an annual celebration of science, skepticism and critical thinking. People from all over the world come to Amaz!ng Meetings each year to share learning, laughs and the skeptical perspective with their fellow skeptics and a host of distinguished guest speakers and panelists.

Sara is scheduled to appear at TAM9, July 14-17, 2011, in Las Vegas, as one of many amazing guest speakers.

Speaking at TED

Recently, Sara spoke about manga and skepticism during TEDActive‘s TEDYou show lounge session. TEDActive is the simulcast, in Palm Springs, of the TED conference which takes place in Long Beach, CA. You can read more about TEDActive and Sara’s TEDYou talk over at her blog, There Are Four Lights.

If we want to distinguish what is true from what we simply want to be true, we will learn to be good skeptics.

Last year, I attended the prestigious TED conference in Long Beach, CA, made cyber-famous by TED.com, as a 2009 TED Fellow. This February, I’ll be attending the conference’s simulcast in Palm Springs, TEDActive. The simulcast takes place at the Riviera Resort and includes a session called TEDYou, where TEDActive members give their own TED talks.

Recently, I found out that I will be one of those members participating in TEDYou. I’m going to be giving a talk on the show lounge stage—-which will be filmed liked the Long Beach TED U talks—-similar to the TED Fellow stage talk I did last year. The subject of my talk will center around my work in creating manga and promoting skepticism and critical thinking through storytelling.

Sara was interviewed by Kate Heartfield for a column in the Ottawa Citizen, which can be read in today’s issue. The article, “Open to Ideas”, talks of Sara’s attendance at TED 2009 as a Fellowship member, her new series Legend of the Ztarr, and the motivation and inspiration behind her work.

Sara was part of the TED Fellows program at this year’s TED 2009 conference. The annual gathering of the world’s leading thinkers and doers took place last week, Feb 3rd-7th, in Long Beach, CA. As a fellowship member, Sara did a talk where she spoke of her new manga series currently in production, Legend of the Ztarr.
